❄️ A Season of Snow—and Support

November 20, 2025

The first snowfall always brings a special kind of magic to Muskoka. The air feels a little crisper, the lakes a little quieter, and our homes a little cozier. As we pull out our winter boots and turn up the heat, it’s also a reminder that not everyone in our community heads into the colder months with the same comfort and security.

Recently, new data from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit highlighted that about 26% of households in our region experience some level of food insecurity, with many families struggling to afford enough nutritious food. While these numbers are sobering, they also shine a light on the incredible organizations working tirelessly to support our neighbours.

We had the privilege of attending the Food 4 Kids Breakfast Gala, and it was truly inspiring to see how much this charity has grown and the impact it continues to make. From providing breakfast and lunch programs to countless children, to expanding its reach across our community, Food 4 Kids demonstrates the power of compassion in action. The gala itself was a beautiful celebration of generosity — seeing so many people come together to support this cause reminded us of the strength and heart of our community.

This season, there are so many ways to help make a difference—big or small:

  • Muskoka Shoebox Project – Fill a shoebox with small luxuries and essentials for women in need. Drop-off runs until December 8 across Muskoka.
  • Food for Kids Muskoka – Support local breakfast and lunch programs that help ensure no student goes hungry this winter.
  • The Salvation Army Christmas Hamper Program – Sponsor a family or donate toys to bring joy to children and relief to parents during the holidays. Registration and donation details are available through The Salvation Army Huntsville & Bracebridge branches.
  • Local Toy Drives – Watch for community drop-off bins around town—Bracebridge OPP’s annual toy drive kicks off in late November, and the Huntsville Fire Department’s toy drive runs through mid-December.

And if you’re up for a little drive, the CP Holiday Train will be stopping nearby in Barrie, MacTier, and Parry Sound, spreading holiday cheer and supporting local food banks along the way.

It’s these acts of kindness—neighbours looking out for neighbours—that make Muskoka such a special place to call home.
